I had a friend over to my house a few years back, and she commented repeatedly on the unique foods in my fridge, the herbs I was growing in my garden, and the natural toothpaste beside my sink. At the end of the night, she said to me that I reminded her of a hippie… “don’t be insulted”, she immediately said following that comment.
She expanded on her hippie comment further and explained that I was more like a modern-day-hippie. I had never heard this term before, but the more I thought about it, the more it rang true! Was I really a modern-day-hippie?
For many years, I’ve paid extra close attention not only what I put in my body, but also what I put on my body. In a world filled with so many unknowns, I really do make an effort to treat myself well and reduce my exposure to toxins. When I find ways to live a more pure and simple life, I implement them… and I always share them with my friends and family in hopes of empowering them to do the same.
Living a modern-day-hippie lifestyle is about getting back to our roots. It’s about finding simple solutions for everyday problems. These solutions are often found in nature, and are the most powerful changes you can make for your health.
Also, keep in mind that living this way is not an all-or-nothing approach. When you start making small changes (i.e. like using the D.I.Y. recipe below), they tend to lead to bigger shifts. These bigger shifts start to create momentum in your own life, but also the lives of those around you – and this is momentum at its best.

Recipe: D.I.Y. Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray
So to inspire beautiful smells, toxin-free yoga mats, and a shift towards a world full of modern-day-hippies who are striving to live cleaner lives, I’m sharing my absolute favourite natural cleaning spray that you can whip up in less than 5 minutes and pack in your yoga bag. This spray is not only great for cleaning your mat, but it’s also a very powerful aromatic tool to enhance your physical and emotional well-being before or after your practice!
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup alcohol-free witch hazel or white vinegar
- 10 drops Lavender essential oil
- 3 drops Tea Tree (aka Melaleuca) essential oil
- Glass spray bottle
1. Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle.
2. Shake until combined.
3. To use, spray on mat and wipe dry with towel.
4. Be amazed at how many people will ask you what smells so good
