Reset Your Body With a One Day Detox

Whether you overindulged last night or are looking to take a step in the right direction, a one-day detox can help you hit that reset button and be on a healthy path.

Think of a one-day detox as a way of hitting the reset button. After one day of healthy eating you’ll be inspired once again to feed your body the nutrient it needs and keep it hydrated.

If you want to make this a part of your regular routine, most experts say to give your body a detox during the spring and the fall. And while it’s true that our bodies have a natural detoxification process, it is good to reduce the amount of processed food and go back to clean eating every once in a while. Why? Toxins have a way of building up in our system, including preservatives, chemical agents, pesticides found in our food, clothes and home. Stress, lack of sleep and lack of activity can also take its toll. Therefore a one-day detox is the perfect way to give your body a break and bring it back to life.

Now’s the time to be good to your body. Take regular breaks throughout the day to get up and walk around (especially if you work at a desk all day). Aim to get moving every 20 minutes or so. Also keep in mind the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look 20 feet away from your computer screen. Your eyes deserve a break too!

Ditch the heavy meal and go with a light salad or soup for lunch and dinner. A lighter meal will help you avoid the afternoon slump and be gentle on your digestion. Take the opportunity to be in the moment and fully enjoy your meal. Turn off the TV, step away from the infinite scroll of social media and take in the sight, smell and taste of your meal. For “dessert”, take a short walk around the block to help digestion.

It goes without saying that one of the best (and easiest) ways to help the detoxification process is to drink plenty of water. Jazz it up with a sprig of mint and a few slices of cucumber for a refreshing twist. Staying hydrated not only helps control cravings, but drinking 3 litres of water on a daily basis will have your skin glowing from the inside out.

One of the most important factors of the detoxification process is sleep. The quality of sleep has been directly linked to stress levels and physical health. Take the time to unplug and unwind before drifting off to La La Land. Creating a nighttime routine that helps you let go is also beneficial – take a bath, use lavender oil, listen to a meditation. Whatever your pleasure, take the time to relax and set the mood for a quality night of beauty sleep.

Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, this energizing green smoothie will satisfy your appetite while giving you the energy you need to go through your day!
