The Most Popular Destinations in 2017 – Part 1

I don’t know if you’re like me, but I’m still looking forward to the next year’s destination lists. Although I have my own list of countries or regions I dream of, I like to keep on the loop of the new trends. So, in order to light up your desire to go on a journey and to inspire you, here are 9 destinations in vogue for 2017.

Cartagena, located on the Colombian Caribbean coast, remained intact through the last conflicts. It has long inspired visitors and writers, especially the novelist Gabriel García Márquez, known for his famous book, “Love at the time of cholera”. This has indeed been one of my favourite destinations in 2016. Walk through the old walled city with its colourful colonial mansions, balconies covered with bougainvillea, and open-air cafes and restaurants, where you can hear the cumbia rhythms and salsa of Cuban influence. Go on an excursion to the surrounding islands to find a beautiful beach, or hike in the jungle.

The countries surrounding Croatia, very popular and accessible thanks to flights offered by Air Transat, have never piqued the curiosity of travellers so much: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro… National Geographic Traveler especially focuses on the Via Dinarica Trail. This mountain range is actually the prolongation of the Alps along the Mediterranean, to the north of Albania. For its part, Lonely Planet highlights the extreme beauty of Ohrid, located in Macedonia, in its list of cities to be seen in 2017.

Bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Sea of Cortez, the Mexican Peninsula of Baja California will give you a unique experience! I have been there, and it is really the region I prefer in Mexico for its natural setting! Dive in to meet huge marine creatures: whales, large white sharks, manta rays, dolphins and a large variety of fish.

Birds flock to the forests of the Ecuadorian Chocó region, considered one of the richest ecosystems on the planet for its fauna. Located north of Quito, on the Andean slopes, this biodiversity hot spot is home to hundreds of species of birds. At the Bellavista Forest Reserve and Lodge, take a guided night walk to spot butterflies and sparkling fireflies. At Mashpi Lodge, hang from a zip line and fly through the fog to admire the view from the top of the tree canopy.
