When we think about thalassotherapy in Greece or in Roman times, it’s becomes pretty clear that wellness travelling isn’t a new phenomenon. During those times though, it was a luxury reserved only for the elite!

Wellness travel has been on the rise in Québec over the last 10 years, and it has been able to adapt to a changing clientele.

The stressful nature of life in western societies has led travellers to seek out this type of getaway. Furthermore, the success of best sellers like Eat, pray, love, have certainly whetted an appetite for taking time for oneself in an Indian ashram or for meeting a spiritual leader in Bali, for example.

Why wellness travelling?

  • To decompress;
  • To take care of yourself;
  • To refocus and center yourself on the essentials and find a better balance for everyday life;
  • To celebrate a 30th, 40th or 50th birthday in a special way;
  • To completely unplug;
  • To get away from it all before everything falls apart at work or in a relationship;
  • To take stock of one’s life and maybe make alternative choices.

Whether it’s taking a yoga class by the sea in Mexico or Costa Rica, doing Pilates on the beach in Honduras, benefitting from Ayurvedic treatments and massages in India, meditating in Nepal, a spa retreat in Chili or a life coaching retreat in Costa Rica, there is no shortage of options!

Why join a small group?
  • Joining a small group provides an opportunity to share and connect with other women or other travellers with similar interests;
  • To benefit from a local instructor’s guidance at beginning of the process, even prior to departure;
  • To make the trip a little more affordable;
  • It’s important to remember that most of these kinds of travellers tend to reserve at the last minute, and accept that a group with a minimum number of people needs to confirm before departing.
Why choose a private option?
  • This method is becoming more common as it affords travellers with the luxury of selecting convenient departure dates and durations;
  • To benefit from a local instructor’s experiences (whose training, however, might be in English);
  • To follow your own pace and go wherever you choose;
  • To seek out more solitude in order to take stock of your life;
  • It should be noted that there affordable choices exist, even for private options.

In a perfect world, it would be best to take two decompression trips each year: one in the fall and another in the spring, especially when the weather at home is gloomy and can affect your state of mind.

Who are these travellers seeking well-being?

In Québec it is most commonly women, of all ages and budgets. For the last five to seven years this type of travel has attracted more young people in their twenties and thirties. The result is new, active travel opportunities (according to current trends): yoga on SUP boards, surfing, salsa, hiking, nutrition or living food workshops or even full out detox.

Europeans, North American and Asians from the most developed countries on the continent, such as Japan and South Korea, are the main followers of this trend and, here again, women form the majority!
