This is the brief story of how Erika danced her way from a home audience of two, to Montreal and beyond
Erika Vipond has been dancing since the age of 3 and by trusting her instincts form one step to the next, she has grown into a professional dancer, choreographer, registered yoga teacher, Master Trainer Essentrics, Manager of Teacher Training and Certified Personal Trainer.
Her grace and ease are contagious and have even touched the hearts of rough sports men, like the Montreal Canadians. You don’t believe it? Have a look at last year’s The Gazette, you will find photos of Erika leading the hockey players through a sensual dynamic stretch routine.
How did it all begin?
I started dancing at the age of 3, and haven’t stopped studying the art of movement since! As a child, I choreographed dance shows for my parents, friends and kids I babysat. This child play grew into a passion and is now my profession. One day, I discovered Essentrics and everything came together perfectly. Essentrics combines all the things I love: music, choreography, functional movement, fiery and dynamic, and it balances my love for yoga so nicely, with its calm, centered, grounded ways.
Advice for those new to Essentrics (or other workout activities)?
1. Take your time and do not force your body, overstretching is terrible nuisance that takes a long time to heal.
2. Commit to your practice, go with a friend to help you stay on top of your goals
3. Don’t take yourself too seriously, it’s about taking care of yourself and having fun while at it.
You mentioned goals… How do you set your goals?
If I set a goal, I will do it with wholehearted commitment.
The best advice I’ve ever been given is to “trust your gut. Never fails!” It is true and as much as I will take a leap of faith and be spontaneous on a regular basis… I also like to plan, especially when it comes to business. I’m kind of a perfectionist, which has pros and cons… But so far, it’s working!
